Overview
:
Image processing in the medical field such as for CT and MRI is increasing in complexity with their enhanced instruments capable of producing vast volumes of data, this is has made it difficult for existing dedicated arithmetic units to process the data. Since image processing is normally well suited for parallel processing, large volumes of images can be processed in a short period of time by utilizing the superior floating point computation capabilities of the Cell/B.E. A high standard of image processing that was previously difficult with existing dedicated arithmetic units is made possible by utilizing the Cell/B.E. and its unique capabilities in the medical field.
This project aims to contribute to society by realizing the enhancement of medical devices through the utilization of the Cell/B.E.

High quality is required from image processing software for medical devices. Therefore, in order to secure the required image quality repeated tests are conducted. For example this involves tests such as thoroughly testing all possible inputs to ensure that output images are correct and to investigate errors contained in output images, which are both arduous but necessary processes to ensure quality improvement.
Optimizing for the Cell/B.E. is especially evident in real-time medical image processing. For engineers, this is a great challenge but also a rewarding one because our efforts are easily visible.
In this project, the theoretical values obtained from the computation algorithm are set as its optimization targets. I gained a lot of confidence when I was able to optimize and meet the theoretical value by not wasting a single CPU cycle.
This project consists of various members whose specializations are being utilized, such as those who researched image processing in university, knowledgeable computer scientists, as well as programmers who have highly specialized experience in various past projects.
This is a very rewarding project with heavy responsibilities since the end products are various medical devices that are used around world.
